What do we do?

Investigate allegations of child abuse:

Investigate all familial and familiar allegations of sexual, physical and emotional abuse, and neglect against children.

Liaise with outside agencies in respect of child protection issues e.g. Health and Social Services, Education, NSPCC, Probation.

Carry out intelligence work and make disclosures in respect of paedophiles and anyone else who may present a risk to children.

Attend multi-agency case conferences regarding children suspected of being at risk.

Conduct home visits with outside agencies where there is concern for a child.

Maintain detailed records on all children who come to notice.

Domestic Violence:

We act as a focal point for other agencies in relation to domestic violence issues.  We offer support, advice and guidance to victims and investigators of domestic violence.  We communicate the Domestic Violence Policy and Best Practice across the Force and to appropriate agencies.

Definition of Domestic Violence

The term ‘domestic violence’ shall be understood to mean any threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between adults who are or have been intimate partners or family members regardless of gender. The violence may include psychological, physical, sexual, emotional or financial abuse.

The following may assist in the application of the definition:

  • an adult is defined as any person over the age of 17yrs
  • family members include mother, father, son, daughter, brother, sister, grandparents, in-laws and stepfamily.

Positive Action

The alleged offender must be held accountable for his/her actions. Where an officer has reasonable suspicion that an offence has recently occurred, the alleged offender will normally be arrested in order to protect the victim.
