The Computer Crime Unit was formed in 1998 following an investigation into a complaint of fraud involving a small business. On that occasion the Guernsey Police enlisted the Greater Manchester Police to conduct the analysis of the computers involved but it was apparent that the Force had a requirement for its own capability.

Presently the unit consists of four temporary personnel, three police officers and a civilian who are all employed in full time roles elsewhere in the organisation but undertake computer crime investigations when the need arises.

Each member of the unit has undergone forensic computer training in the UK and the USA and the unit keeps abreast of the latest advances in computer technology. The unit can also call upon the services of the Serious Organised Crime Agency in the UK and on occasion can employ the services of specialist companies.

To date the unit has had to deal with various types of crime including offences against children, possession and supply of illegal substances, illegal fishing in the territorial waters of Guernsey, fraud and many other types of crime. One of the largest enquiries occurred in 2002 where the unit investigated a number of computers as a result of Operation Ore which involved possession of child pornography.
